Mathis Thinks Coding is a Language Everyone Should Learn!

At the school Featured Maker Mathis attends in Montreal, kids get to select a major when they move to Secondary School. Mathis chose CREATIC, a fascinating fusion of programming, robotics, computers and electronics.Mathis lives in Montreal, Canada, and loves reading, playing video games, and going on walks. He’s only twelve years old but already has big goals – he wants to be a computer programmer or video game designer when he grows up!

From what we heard from his mother Myriam, Tynker has had a really positive impact on Mathis! She told us, “Tynker gives him a sense of control and self-accomplishment. It also gives him an opportunity to create a game by himself from scratch to the final result.” We’ve been really impressed with the quality of Mathis’s projects, and we were lucky enough to chat with him about what inspires him to code and why he loves it.

What’s your favorite subject in school? My favorite class is called CREATIC, it’s a programming class at my level. We study programming, robotics, and the creation of objects in 3D through programming applications and a 3D drawing software. We’ve even had a Fab Lab at school since October!

How did you feel when you found out your project had been featured? I was very happy, proud, and excited.

How did you get introduced to coding/Tynker? By my CREATIC class teacher.

How did you learn how to use Tynker? In my CREATIC class, the teacher gives us exercises to learn how to code.

Have you played through any Tynker courses? Yes, during the lunch break at the Fab Lab at school.

How do you get inspiration for your projects? I get my inspiration through the existing games in the community and through my own ideas.

How do creativity and coding fit together for you? I imagine a game in my head and check if I can do it in Tynker! Otherwise, I try another idea.

Why do you like to code? I like to code because it’s logic and I love logic.

What is your favorite project you’ve made so far? Crazy plane.

What are you planning to make next? I am doing a game about Youtuber lifestyle.

What do you do with a project when you’re done with it? I publish it on the community and I send it to my friends.

What’s your favorite feature in Tynker? The “if – then” block!

How do you think learning coding now might help you in the future? It’s always practical to know how to code – electronic objects and technologies are everywhere now.

Do you think other kids should try coding? Yes! Coding can help every single person in his life. It’s a language that children should learn at school, like English or French.

What advice would you give for kids starting out with Tynker? Persevere – even when you miss!

Myriam, Mathis’s mother, told us that she’s really proud of Mathis and his coding abilities! As we discussed the importance of learning to code in this day and age, Myriam made a great point, saying, “Coding is like learning a new language. Tynker makes it fun to learn computer programming.”

When asked how she supports Mathis with his coding, she had a fantastic answer. She said, “I’m asking questions about his games. I’m asking what obstacles he will create in the next level. I tell him to persevere and try again and again. He will find a solution if he works on it long enough.”

She listed several skills that she thinks coding helps him build: “Perseverance. Creativity. Logic. Problem-solving. Reading and re-reading. I’m very happy that, through Tynker, Mathis found a way to channel and challenge his creativity and curiosity.”

Myriam continued with, “Tynker really helps Mathis to stay focused and concentrated for a long period of time, which is something he is working on right now. It also shows him that when he is involved and passionate in a project or subject, his focus is there and for a long period of time.”
