Coding for Kids
Meet our newest Featured Maker, 8th grader Tim from Germany! He likes to play chess and tennis. Tim talked with us about his experience coding with Tynker:
How did you get introduced to Tynker?
By my parents, and I’ve been coding 2 years.
How did you learn to use Tynker?
I actually learned by testing out new blocks and dragging it to Codey on the top corner, and I did like two courses!
Have your coding skills improved since you started using Tynker?
A lot! I didn’t know what lists were before, but now I do!
How did you feel when you found out your project had been featured?
Very happy!
What’s your favorite project you’ve made so far?
Dodge the Ball! I like it because it took me very long to complete, and it’s so hard that I can’t even beat it!
Where did you get the idea for your project?
I got the idea from another project called, the Wheel.
How do you get inspiration for your projects?
I get inspiration from other people’s projects!
Why do you like to code?
I like to code because then I can code with my brother!
What’s your favorite way to use code?
I like variables because they are very, very useful!
What do you do with a project when you’re done with it?
I just publish them immediately!
What are you planning to make next?
I’m making an update for Dodge the Ball with different skins!
What’s the best thing about Tynker?
That it has good graphics, and there’s lots of different actors to choose from!
How do you think learning to code has prepared you for the future?
It’s taught me to be very logical!
Do you think other kids should try coding?
Yes, because it’s really fun!
What advice would you give to kids starting out with Tynker?
You should try project templates. When you create a project it has lots of Tynker code in them, but they’re actually very easy to understand!
Tim’s mother, Wara, spoke with us about her son learning to code with Tynker:
He likes to play with his computer a lot. I can see that he can code better than other boys the same age so I suggest he do something like this. So, I just gave it to him and then he started coding by himself. I did not supervise him, and he was doing projects on his own.
What benefits do you think coding has for him?
It can help him become a programmer if he chooses to be in this field. I saw that it fuels his competitiveness because he was in a competition, and the teacher didn’t know that he knew all of that!
Do you feel that he is better prepared for the future?
Yes, if he wants to get into this computing field, he’s already prepared.
