Coding for Kids
Meet our newest Featured Maker, 9-year-old Sigrid from Washington! She likes drawing dragons, going to the library to read, and she’s been playing the piano for five years. And when she grows up, she wants to be a game programmer! Sigrid talked with us about her experience coding with Tynker:
How did you learn to use Tynker when you were first starting out?
I started off with the courses but then I started picking up on code and started making my own games, and I think my first project ever was an animation!
Have your coding skills improved since you started using Tynker?
When I started all I could do was some really poor animation, so I looked at courses to see how to make my games and stuff. Then, I actually started getting more independent and just using the coding skills I’ve learned so far to make better and better games. I sometimes go into all those projects and remix them to see how they coded it and get inspiration for my own projects and stuff!
How did you feel when you found out your project had been featured?
I was really shocked and surprised and really happy at the same time!
What’s your favorite project you’ve made so far?
My guinea pig game is my favorite! I like the fact that it has a guinea pig!
Where did you get the idea for your project?
I got the idea from my guinea pig!
How do you get inspiration for your projects?
From the community board and other people’s projects! Also, my guinea pigs!
Why do you like to code?
Making projects and then playing them!
What is your favorite way to use code?
I can tell you my most used code block is switch to costume!
What do you do with a project when you’re done with it?
I play a few times looking for bugs before I actually publish it.
What’s the best thing about Tynker?
You can create your own game!
How do you think learning to code has prepared you for the future?
Because I want my job to be a game programmer!
Do you think other kids should try coding?
Yes! Because you can create your own games!
What advice would you give to kids starting out with Tynker?
Practice a lot!
Sigrid’s mother, Yanping, spoke with us about her daughter coding with Tynker:
You know, usually you don’t want your kid having too much screen time, but she tells me that she’s not playing, she’s studying.
How do you support her coding endeavors?
She does it all by herself!
What benefits do you think coding has for Sigrid?
I would say patience.
Do you feel that she’s better prepared for the future?
She likes games and working on computers and she’s good at math. So, maybe she can find a job in something like that.
