Coding for Kids
Meet our newest Featured Maker, 6th grader Isaac from Tennessee! His favorite subject in school is math, and when he grows up he wants to be a math teacher! Isaac talked with us about his experience coding with Tynker:
How did you get introduced to Tynker?
I was introduced to it last year in our STEM room.
How did you learn to use Tynker?
I just kind of learned from messing around with it and looking at what other people did. I remixed other things and looked at their coding and saw what it would do!
Have your coding skills improved since you started using Tynker?
The way that they word the coding blocks, I’m able to take that and kind of interpret it in a way that other people could understand it!
How did you feel when you found out your project had been featured?
I was ecstatic!
What’s the favorite project you’ve made so far?
The one that got featured actually, the music box. It took a lot, and I worked on it every once in a while and it was just one of those side projects that was probably one of my favorite ones to do!
Where did you get the idea for your project?
I actually take piano lessons so a few of the songs I learned from the music class and stuff!
How do you get inspiration for your projects?
My mom!
Why do you like to code?
It’s just one of those things that you feel prioritized to do. It’s like, hey, I want to do this so I’m going to do it!
Do you have a favorite code block?
When after touched!
What do you do with a project when you’re done with it?
I’ll brag to my friends first and then I’ll publish it!
What’s the best thing about Tynker?
Viewing what everyone else is doing and sometimes just building off of that!
Is there anything we should change or add to Tynker?
I think everything is working just fine!
Do you think learning to code has prepared you for the future?
I would like to be a teacher one day, so I think if I were to teach about coding, I would be able to teach about it!
Do you think other kids should try coding?
Yes, definitely. It’s so much fun!
What advice would you give to kids starting out with Tynker?
If someone says your project is wrong or it’s not good, that’s just their opinion. You have your opinion and you can make it whatever you want because it’s yours!
Bonus: What’s a fun fact about you?
I’ve always liked to build off of what other people do and make it my own!
Issac’s mother, Wei, spoke with us about her son learning to code with Tynker:
Actually, I really appreciate you brought Isaac’s app/project to my attention because I didn’t know he was doing that. He ended up showing me what he did. It impressed me, so it’s actually your company, your website, and you helped and guided him to learn more skills, so I really appreciate that.
How do you support his coding endeavors?
I believe STEM is the future. I would encourage him to learn coding. It’s so good that Tynker gives him the opportunity to learn the coding skills and at the same time to bring in some fun for him. I am so happy to see that.
What benefits do you think coding has for him?
I think learning coding will influence the way he thinks. It will help improve his logical thinking and analytical skills.
Do you feel that he’s better prepared for the future?
I hope so! He’s actually taken some initiative. I did not know he was doing that and he’s made it something that other people will enjoy and that’s, you know, that’s impressive.
