Meet our newest Featured Maker and Coding Cup winner, 10-year-old Dominic from Tennessee! Dominic likes minecraft, legos, and karate. Awesome! Dominic recently spoke with us about his experience coding with Tynker.
How did you learn how to use Tynker when you were first starting out? What are some of your favorite Tynker courses or tutorials?
Well, I’m pretty sure some of the first things I did was Dragon Dash and Code Monsters.
How have your coding skills improved since you started using Tynker?
From knowing nothing to knowing a lot.
What is your favorite project you’ve made so far, and what do you like about it?
Well, there’s a lot of ones that I really like. Probably my favorite is this remix. I’m pretty sure it’s called Dungeon Attack. I haven’t played it for a while. It’s a remix. I just changed the characters and added a few more stuff, but it’s great.
Why do you like to code?
I can basically make anything I want.
What is your favorite way to use code? Do you have a favorite code block?
The On Start block.
What are you planning to make next?
I was thinking of this racing game. Or maybe a multilevel battle game where you have battle opponents.
What’s the best thing about Tynker?
That I can make video games.
Do you think other kids should try coding? Why is that?
I think they should because it’s especially if they finish school early, so they have to do more stuff. And they don’t have to sit doing nothing.
What’s a fun fact about you?
Fun fact, I live on 48 acres, and I have about 30 chickens?
We spoke with Dominic’s mom about Dominic learning to code
How do you feel about Dominic learning to code? How does it feel to see the coding projects that he is making?
I think it’s really cool because, as I said, it’s very hard to challenge him. So in school, it’s very hard because he’s very good at it. He’s very smart. So it’s good because this seems to do the trick. When he’s creating something and then he sees that a code didn’t work and he has to go back through it, and I feel like it’s stuff that’s challenging. It challenges him, so I like that.
What benefits do you think coding has for your child? What skills, besides the technical skills of coding, does it help him learn?
I haven’t read much into it, but I assume that it’s a little bit like learning a language, that it kind of creates new pathways or ways of thinking. Because that’s how it is. You learn a coding language, so. And now in the world that we live in, everything is computer coding, programming. It’s so important for them to learn. So even though I didn’t I just learned when I went to high school. I had some coding classes, but that was it. So I don’t know that much. But I recognize how important it is for them to learn.
