Meet our newest Featured Maker, 5th grader Delilah from California! She likes to paint and play games, and her favorite subject in school is reading. Delilah spoke with us about her experience coding with Tynker:
How did you get introduced to Tynker?
By a classmate in like third grade, so like three years.
How did you learn how to use Tynker?
I kind of just like drew things and remixed!
Have your coding skills improved since you started using Tynker?
They improved pretty good! I couldn’t get the one where you turn it to a certain degree, like I wasn’t good at turning stuff but now I can turn on rotating.
How did you feel when you found out your project was featured?
I was really happy. I even took a screenshot of it!
What’s your favorite project you’ve made so far?
It’s the Pokemon clicker. I like it because that was my first project I actually put time into.
Where did you get the idea for your project?
That was a remix one, like I remixed it and drew other stuff. So I got the project from the original. It took me like three days, I think.
How do you get inspiration for your projects?
By looking at other projects.
Why do you like to code?
Because it’s fun and it helps you make games and stuff.
What’s your favorite way to use code?
I think it’s the loop one because it’s really helpful. It saves you a lot of time.
What do you do with a project when you’re done with it?
I continue looking at it like a few times. I play and then if I see a bug, I will try fixing it.
What’s the best thing about Tynker?
I think it’s because you can interact with others by remixing and stuff. And like all the fan clubs up there are so you could join those too.
Is there anything we should change or add to Tynker?
No, not really. I think it’s pretty good.
Do you think learning to code has prepared you for the future?
In the future, there’s gonna be a lot of coding jobs because technology is a big part of the world.
Do you think other kids should try coding?
Yeah, I think so because it could help them in the future.
What advice would you give to kids starting with Tynker?
Remix projects because that helps a lot.
Bonus: What’s a fun fact about you?
A lot of my projects are based on Nyan Cat because I used to have an obsession with that for no reason and now I just make them.
Parent Questions
Delilah’s mother, Jocelyn, spoke with us about her daughter learning to code with Tynker:
It’s always really fun when she completes her project because she’ll come and show it to us and sometimes have us click on certain things, so it’s really nice to see it all together.
How do you support her coding endeavors?
I think we just kind of will talk about it, like if she has a project coming out as we’re having dinner or stuff like that. You know, I think it’s really important to follow her dreams. And, if there is something that she likes to do, we do support it.
What benefits do you think coding has for her?
I think eventually your whole career with finding jobs maybe and just also as a way to distract yourself skillfully with the pandemic. It’s been a very important part for her, like it gives her something to do, something to look forward to, and things like that.
Do you feel that she’s better prepared for the future?
I do think she’s very prepared for the future and she has a lot of different qualities. You know she’s a story writer. She’s always busy.
Thank you!
We want to thank Delilah and her mother for taking the time to speak with us about coding with Tynker. We can’t wait to see what Delilah creates next – HAPPY CODING!
