Coding Prepares Joshua For His Dream Job!

Eight-year-old Joshua is in 3rd grade. He lives in Vancouver and loves playing sports – basketball, tennis, and skiing are his favorites. Joshua also loves Lego robotics and creating idea sketches. We really liked his Tynker projects, and chatted with him to learn what he likes to do, and why he loves coding!

What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to become a game producer just like my dad. My dad was a game company director.

How did you get introduced to Tynker? I got introduced to coding in school from grade 12 students.

What’s your favorite feature in Tynker? I like the puzzles! They show how to get started. I completed a few of the puzzles – Dragon Journey and Candy Quest and Lost in Space. My favorite one was Dragon Journey.

What are you planning to make next? A board game I made, Flingshot. It’s a game where you start at the slingshot and flick your finger on one of the pieces. You’re aiming for the cannon or the 1000 cannon. There are tons of tiles – the green tiles and the hearts do the same thing. The skull and bone also do the same thing – they let your opponent get one extra turn. You take turns in the game.

What is your favorite thing you’ve made? I have 3 favorite things. One is Plants vs. Shapes, Silly Art (which I changed from Falling Trails), and Geometry Gallup Dash.

Why do you like to code? I like to code because it helps make my dream to become a game producer come true. I like to make battle games and adventure games.

Do you think other kids should try coding? Yes, because they can create fun games that can soon become famous.

What advice would you give for kids starting out with Tynker? I would advise them to start off with the puzzles.

Joshua’s parents are happy to see he is interested in learning how to code. Joshua’s dad believes coding is beneficial for kids because “they can improve their train of logic which is not easily to develop so I think coding is really helpful for that.” Both of Joshua’s parents think that coding is a great hobby for Joshua, as he wants to be a game designer. His dad said, “Tynker gave him some stepping stones to learn how to make a game,” and his mom noted, “There is a great connection between coding, art, and game design.”
