Coding Motivates Jonah To Learn New Math Concepts!

Jonah is in 2nd grade and is eight years old. He lives in Malabar, Florida and loves to game and play with Legos! He uses Tynker as part of his homeschooling curriculum, and also helps his little brothers code with Tynker. He published some very cool games to the Tynker community, so we interviewed him to learn more about why he loves to code.

What do you want to be when you grow up? A coder so I could code a bunch of games and make the next operating system.

How did you get introduced to Tynker? That was like a year ago. It was an app on my iPad, then mom got it for me on the computer.

What is your favorite thing you’ve made? Battle Commander.

What’s your favorite feature in Tynker? I like using the level editor. I got really good at the platformer games.

How did you learn to use Tyker? I learned about broadcasts inside the community, and I learned about dialogue boxes inside the community because you can open up the code and look at it.

Are you working on any projects currently? I’m working on making projects with Tynker and Minecraft.

Why do you like to code? I like to make fun games and I like it when a bunch of people like my project.

What advice would you give for kids starting out with Tynker? I would give them the beginning things you really need to know when you begin with Tynker.

Zuny and Chris, Jonah’s mom and dad, love that he’s learning to code. Jonah’s dad Chris is a software developer, but he said that Jonah doesn’t usually need any help on his coding projects. Zuny told us, “Coding is part of our homeschooling curriculum. Mostly because it’s what drives him. Chris is a software developer, so he wants to be like dad.” She added that coding has helped Jonah with reading, math, and logic, and really motivates him. Zuny said, ”the code is what’s making him want to learn the science he needs to learn to get to physics. It opens up the gaming world.” She’s excited to see where Jonah takes his skill and passion for coding. She told us, “it’s going to be really great to see how far he can go before he hits the 9th grade, math-wise, because we plan on sticking with Tynker until there’s nothing else to learn there. It’s a daily thing for him and hopefully his little brothers follow in his footsteps in that whole learning thing, because it’s such a good lifelong thing.”
