Coding Allows Camille to Combine Math and Art!

Camille is in 4th grade and lives in St. Louis, Missouri! She’s ten years old and likes Roblox, playing piano, and in her words, “Tynker of course – I really like that, it’s fun.” We’ve been really excited by her projects so we wanted to find out more about why she codes with Tynker!

What’s your favorite subject in school? I like math and art.

What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be a kids doctor – a pediatrician. I just like to work with kids.

How did you get introduced to Tynker? The principal downloaded the app on our school iPads because we have those. We had a coding unit and I just got totally addicted to it.

How long have you been using Tynker? Since the coding unit. I don’t really remember exactly when that was, maybe February.

What is your favorite thing you’ve made? The project I made called Interview With a Goldfish.

What inspired you to make that project? I don’t know, I just kind of thought of it. It just kind of came to me like a vision.

Do you look at the Tynker community projects? Yes I do. I love them. There was one called The Maze Game, it was a huge hit. There are lots of projects where people will list the projects they like most, and that one gets the top chart almost every time.

What’s your favorite feature in Tynker? I like pretty much everything – I do like the broadcast feature though. That’s how you make the buttons and do other things.

What are you planning to make next? There’s a game called Very Organized Thief. It’s a real game, but I’m making a Tynker version. It’s actually really good so far

What do you do with a project when you’re done with it? I usually post it if it’s really good.

Why do you like to code? I just think it’s really fun in general. I’m not sure why I really like it, I just do! It’s challenging.

Do you think other kids should try coding? I think they should because it does exercise your brain and you can make lots of cool games.

What advice would you give for kids starting out with Tynker? I would probably tell them how “start” and “say” work first, and then they could learn about how the characters ask questions.

Camille’s mom Amy thinks it’s “pretty cool and exciting” that Camille is learning to code! When asked what benefits coding has for kids, she said, “I think it exercises your mind. I also think it’s cool to learn now because you can see if that’s something you want to use in your life later on, whether that’s in school or a job.”
