According To Tomás, Coding Helps With Math Skills!
Nine-year-old Tomás is in 3rd grade and lives in Santa Marta, Colombia. He enjoys watching videos, programming with Tynker, and watching TV. We were very impressed by his projects, so we chatted with him to hear a bit about why he loves coding!
What’s your favorite subject in school? Art. I like that I sometimes get to draw things.
What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be a programming engineer.
How did you get introduced to Tynker? My parents read an article about websites for coding for kids.
How long have you been using Tynker? About a year.
What is your favorite thing you’ve made? The Sonic the Hedgehog project.
Where do you get ideas for your projects? I get ideas from the video game company called Sega – it makes video games like Sonic the Hedgehog.
Do you look at the Tynker community projects? Yes. I get inspired by the people who make projects.
What’s your favorite thing about Tynker? I like that I can program whatever I want.
What are you working on currently? I am trying to make a Pokemon game.
Why do you like to code? I like to code because I can do whatever I want and show it to people.
Do you think other kids should try coding? Yes, because they can learn math and all that stuff.
What advice would you give for kids starting out with Tynker? I’d tell them to try making the tutorials so they can learn about how to code.
Tomás’s dad Roberto codes too (he leads a programming team at work), so he loves that Tomás is learning to code!
When asked about the benefits coding has for kids, Roberto said, “It has multiple benefits I think. They learn how to make decisions logically, it’s helped to develop all of the math skills, concentration, and leads to improving imagination.”
We couldn’t agree more! Thanks for your time, Tomás and Roberto. We’re so glad you’re loving coding with Tynker, Tomás – we’re looking forward to seeing your Pokemon project! Keep coding!
