Maverick Loves The Endless Possibilities Of Coding

Eight-year-old Maverick hails from San Clemente, California. He’s in 3rd grade and loves playing the piano, chess matches, and reading. We noticed his excellent projects, and wanted to get to know more about him and why he codes!

What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be an engineer because I want to make a time machine when I grow up.

How did you get introduced to Tynker? My mom told me about it. She set me up with the website and I didn’t really know anything about it, but then there were things on the website that taught me what every single block of code did. I’ve been using it for 8 months.

Do you look at the Tynker community projects? Yeah, I do sometimes. I get some ideas from it. You can program basically anything, and sometimes some projects are a little like mine. I’ve seen another Spongebob one but it’s not exactly like mine. I’ve also seen another Mario project.

What’s your favorite feature in Tynker? That you can code anything. Like, if I wanted to make a story about anything, I could just make it.

What are you planning to make next? I just recently published a project. The Spongebob one was also recently published. I also recently published a thing that said “Thank you for all the likes.”

What is your favorite thing you’ve made? My project with Spongebob, even though it doesn’t have many likes. It only has two likes, but I like it. Spongebob and Patrick get caught in a net.

Why do you like to code? Like I said before, I can make anything.

Do you think other kids should try coding? Yes, because it’s really fun.

What advice would you give for kids starting out with Tynker? I would tell them what each block would do. For instance simple blocks, like the talk block or the wait block.

Maverick’s mom Priscilla thinks it’s great he’s learning to code! Priscilla says her kids don’t play video games, and she uses electronics in a limited capacity as part of her homeschool curriculum. But when other other homeschooling mothers recommended Tynker, she decided to try it out with her kids. She says she could “instantly see the benefit when I saw them breaking down each block in JavaScript” and Maverick has been coding ever since!
