Coding for Kids
Meet our newest Featured Maker, 6th grader Gus from Japan! He likes to read books, and when he grows up he wants to be a movie maker. Cool! Gus recently spoke with us about his experience coding with Tynker.
How long have you been coding?
I started in 2020.
Have your coding skills improved since you started using Tynker?
A lot.
How did you feel when you found out your project had been featured?
Excited.
How do you get inspiration for your projects?
Looking at the community.
Why do you like to code?
Because I would like to become a game designer when I grow up also.
What do you do with a project when you’re done with it?
I just save it and then go to the next project.
Do you know what you’re going to make next?
An RPG game (role-playing video game).
What’s the best thing about Tynker?
I think the things you can create.
Has learning to code prepared you for the future?
Yes.
Do you think other kids should try coding?
Yes, I think it’s fun.
What advice would you give to kids starting out with Tynker?
To use your imagination.
What’s your favorite subject in school?
I think, history.
What’s a fun fact about you?
I like to make books.
Gus’ mother, Hillary, spoke with us about her son learning to code with Tynker:
I think it’s really cool. And I like Tynker because he can just kind of go at his own pace, and it’s all self-directed and self-guided. And he’s learned a lot in the time that he’s been using the program.
Do you think coding has any benefits for Gus?
I think using his creativity and maybe goal-setting for the projects that he wants to do.
How do you support Gus’ coding endeavors?
We just try to give him the tools that he needs in the program to do the projects that he wants to do.
