Roscel Channels Her Creativity Into Code!

This week’s Featured Maker loves art – she uses her skills to make her own characters in Tynker! Roscel, who is in fifth grade, lives and codes in Canada.

She’s 10 years old, and while she doesn’t have a specific career for the future in mind, Roscel wants to have “a job that has something to do with the internet, that’s related to the internet.” Read on to learn about Roscel’s experience coding with Tynker!

What’s your favorite subject in school? Art. I like it because I’m very creative.

How did you feel when you found out your project had been featured? I was so happy!

How did you get introduced to Tynker? I just found it on the internet!

How did you learn how to use Tynker? I looked around until I knew.

How do you get inspiration for your projects? Sometimes I look at other people’s projects.

How do creativity and coding fit together for you? I code a project I really want to do, and I just keep doing it. Her dad pitched in, saying, “The project that she is doing, she’ll just concentrate on what she is doing on the coding, and she’s doing the game or the program she just focuses on that.”

Why do you like to code? I just like it!

What is your favorite project you’ve made so far? I don’t know – I like them all!

“Happy St. Patrick’s!”

What are you planning to make next? I just made a new one. I got it from a seasonal project, and I just messed around a bit to make it my own.

What do you do with a project when you’re done with it? I test it so I know it works, then I publish it.

Do you ever Tynker with your friends or family? I make projects with my dad sometimes. He just gives me an idea and then I make the game.

How do you think learning coding now might help you in the future? Maybe I could program a game.

Do you think other kids should try coding? Yes, because it’s fun and it helps you learn.

What advice would you give to kids starting out with Tynker? Experiment with blocks so you know what they do.

When we asked Roscel’s dad, Roy, how he felt about his daughter’s budding coding skills, he told us, “I am mesmerized and happy at the same time!”

He told us a bit about how Roscel’s coding journey started! “She was looking at the computer, so I said, ‘How about you look around the internet and see if you can make your own games?’ She found out about Tynker because she really wanted to learn how to do games on her own. She likes art and she likes to draw her own drawings.” In fact, he told us, “Her mom and I didn’t teach her – she just learned it by herself!”

As far as the benefits that coding has for kids, Roy honed in on the skill of patience. He said, “I think it really helps kids – they are very patient with it! Some kids have no patience about doing this work because it’s kind of confusing if you don’t know how to do it, but if you have the passion or want to do something, it’s worth doing.” He predicted, “I think it will be more popular with more and more kids.”
