Denzel’s Love of Books Inspires Him to Code!

“I like books and I like coding and sometimes books inspire me to code!” Meet Denzel from Australia, who loves to ride his bike, read and write books, and code. He has plans to make a game called Superbook!

Denzel, who’s 8 years old and in Year 3, has lots of great hobbies. In his words, “Sometimes I like to ride my bike and sometimes I like to write books. I’ve made some books over the past years – I even have a journal – and I have a lot of books. I like to read.”

What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be a writer when I grow up, and also a coder!

What’s your favorite subject in school? Reading and writing.

How did you feel when you found out your project had been featured? I didn’t think that that was going to happen! I made the projects and I showed everybody at school.

How did you get introduced to Tynker? It was a really long time ago; I used to use a different program and then I discovered Tynker.

How did you learn how to use Tynker? I just did some tutorials. I also looked at the community – there are lots of cool projects!

How do you get inspiration for your projects? Sometimes I just think about what I should do and what my projects should be. It’s kind of like my books – I come up with ideas, even if I’m in the middle of writing!

How do creativity and coding fit together for you? Sometimes I look at other people’s projects. I like making games!

 What is your favorite project you’ve made so far? The project that got featured!

What are you planning to make next? Yeah! I was working on this game because I was inspired by a spooky game. I’m almost done with it. I was also making this project called “Codey’s World.” It’s like a platformer; you can go to another level.

What’s your favorite feature in Tynker? I like that you can listen to tutorials.

How do you think learning coding now might help you in the future? Maybe I could make some websites with JavaScript, making games and apps! Sometimes my dad says if you’re coding games you’re smart.  

Denzel’s mom Clare thinks Denzel is excelling with coding, and so do we! She told us, “He loves it. He’s got this coding class at school, but I think he’s a bit further than others since he practices so much.” 

When kids code, she said, “they can think a bit more rather than when they’re playing computer games.” We agree – the difference between making and simply playing is huge! As Clare mentioned, “They’re using their brains a bit more.”
